All About the Telephone Code System
Today, the phone number format for countries in the US, Canada, and most of the Caribbean has this format: XXX – XXX – XXXX. The first XXX group is the NPA code designated by the North American Numbering Plan Administration (NANPA). The next three digits of the phone number are called the NXX, and refers to the exchanges (prefixes). The telephone service provider or carrier is the one that reserves these groups of numbers within an area code. Finally, the last group of Xs is the subscriber number.
If we take a look at the total number of NPA and NXX combinations available today, we can say that there are roughly 1.600.000.000 possible telephone number combinations, leaving about 4 numbers per person. That doesn’t mean there are way too many available, especially since many businesses and people use multiple phone lines.
All in all, it’s pretty organized right? However, it wasn’t always like that.
Why an Area Code System is Needed
From the late 19th century until the 20th century, The Bell Telephone Company and AT&T practically have a monopoly on telephone services in the US. During the mid-19th century, human operators redirected calls to their destinations. There were no numbers involved. However, there were too many errors and misunderstandings. As a result, the Bell Company introduced a new way to dial the phones using standardized abbreviations and numbers. Eventually, the network would expand so much that it became apparent that there is a need for area codes. Just only by adding the 3 additional numbers right before a local number meant that millions of new phone numbers can be issued.
In Northern America, which includes the US, Canada, and most of the Caribbean, the allocation of phone numbers is controled by the NANPA. They also govern divisions, adjustments to, or generations of new area codes. They also allocate these numbers to telephone service providers.
In addition to using area codes for specific regions, the NANPA also designates certain area codes for special purposes. The 800 code, for example, is exclusively for toll-free calls wherein the one receiving the call is the one charged as opposed to the one making the call.
Area codes specifically were created in 1947 to satisfy post-WWII’s increased demand for telephone services. Today, more area codes are issued to accommodate the growing demand for telephone services. Since the NANPA is responsible for assigning area codes, it also follows the international standard for numbering plans.
As mentioned, in the United States, more than 310 area codes are in use. Depending on the number of people living in your area, you may interact with one or more area codes. Densely populated states like Florida and California are covered with more than one area code, whereas low population states like Montana and Idaho only have one area code.

Why You Need to Know Area Codes
What would you do if you got a call from an unknown area code? The natural reaction is to reject it, right?
Area codes serve as a means for us to know where the call is coming from. It might be that the person on the other line is your future employer, business partner, or customer, and there are times that you need to know that information. It might also be that somebody is calling you because of an emergency about a family member.
If you are keen on maintaining your privacy and do not want intrusive phone calls, you must know the area codes and its purpose. It has never been more important than these days! Many people are constantly thinking of ways to scam others. One common scam involves shady people calling their targets, usually with the help of auto-dialers, and hanging up before someone from the other end answers. When this happens, the target is usually so curious about the missed call that he calls the number back. In this case, however, it is likely a premium number, similar to the one set up by psychic hotlines and phone sex operators that automatically receive the calls you make and charge an arm and a leg for each one.
In these cases, a surefire way to stay protected is: never call an unknown phone number back unless you are 100% sure about who’s calling! However, it’s understandable that you’re worried about missing an important call. In such cases, performing a reverse phone lookup or area code lookup can help.
The next time you receive a call from an unknown area code, it is better to trace the caller’s number using our website. You never know, and it might be a call about some good news.

Caller ID showed "No" only, so I didn't pick up. Left me a voice message. It was John from Office Depot to notify my order is on hold because PayPal didn't authorize the transaction. This really happened. So, call is legit. Accent was off so probably overseas call center using generic name. I'll just call regular OD number and fix the issue. Never respond to any caller calling you.
I received multiple (10) 2 second to 8 second voicemails within the span of 5 minutes or less.

This number calls my phone at least once per week looking for "Roger". They claim to be a roofing company in Roanoke, TX. I have asked them several times to remove my number from their files and not to call back but they continue to call. When I told them that I did not want to talk with them at all, the caller became rather obnoxious and told me that he intended to call as often as he wanted. I placed this number on "block caller" but they continue to call.

They called my cell repeatedly but never left a message. I called the number back from another device. Recording appeared to be from chase. I immediately logged into my chase account nothing appeared to be abnormal, no unauthorized charges etc. I then googled the number and found people who did answer call reporting the call coming from Chase and reported it as a scam. I am glad I did not take call and reported it.
